AFTER WINNING TWO EUROPEAN UNION GRANTS:
THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY WILL CHAMPION CAPACITY BUILDING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY IN AFRICA
The Faculty of Engineering and Technology of University of Buea has won two European Union (EU) grants to enhance postgraduate training in renewable energy in nine African Universities. These grants were awarded within the framework of the 2019 EU Intra-African Mobility programme. The European Union received a total of 68 projects, seven of which were shortlist for funding. Two of the shortlisted proposals were awarded to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University of Buea. These include the Mobility of African Scholars for Transformative Engineering Training (MASTET) and the Mobility for Innovative Renewable Energy Training (MIRET) projects.

The MASTET project will fund students and staff mobility across six top African universities, including University of Buea, Makerere University (Uganda), University of Cairo (Egypt), University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), University of Abomey Calavi (Benin) and the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The MIRET project on its part will fund student and staff mobility across five African Universities – University of Buea, Arap Moi University (Kenya), University of Zambia, University of Sfax (Tunisia), and Makerere University (Uganda).

The EU funded MASTET and MIRET projects are significant mile stone for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and the University of Buea as a whole. The two projects will greatly enhance the sustainability of the renewable energy technology which is strategic to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. It will create opportunities for postgraduate students and staff of the University of Buea, as well as the other partner universities to undertake exchange aimed at improving the knowledge and skill base of post graduate students and staff in renewable energy.
